Moving Into Student Housing? Change the Locks Before Your Tech Goes Missing

It's that time of year again. New halls, new shared house, new locker — and thousands of pounds of tech sitting in all of them. Your laptop, phone, tablet, headphones and console are the most valuable things you own as a student, and the people most likely to take them aren't mysterious burglars. They're people who already have a key.

Here's what students (and parents paying the insurance bills) should do in the first 48 hours of the new term.

The risk nobody mentions: who else has a key?

When you move into student accommodation, the lock on your door is rarely new. In shared houses and many private halls, that cylinder has been through years of tenants. And here's the uncomfortable truth: you can't know how many keys to that door still exist.

• Previous tenants who "lost" their keys — or quietly kept them

• Contractors, cleaners and letting agents who were handed a set

• A landlord who re-keys between tenancies… or one who doesn't

• Flatmates' friends and visitors who were lent a key and never gave it back

One copied or unreturned key turns your "secure" room into an open door. Most student theft isn't a dramatic break-in. It's someone walking in during a lecture, grabbing a laptop from a desk, and closing the door behind them. By the time you're back, they're long gone — and the lock shows no sign of forced entry.

Dorm rooms and shared houses: re-key before you unpack

If your tenancy agreement allows it (and in most UK student lets it does, as long as you restore the original lock at the end), change the cylinder or re-key the lock on day one. It costs far less than one replacement laptop — and it's the single biggest step you can take to protect everything you bring with you.

Not sure if you can change it? Ask your landlord or letting agent in writing. Most responsible landlords are happy for you to fit your own British Standard or anti-snap cylinder, and many will do it themselves if you simply ask. If they say no, ask for written confirmation that the locks were re-keyed before your tenancy started.

Lockers: the default-code trap

School, college and gym lockers have their own weakness — shared or predictable access. Factory-default combinations, codes passed around friendship groups, and cheap padlocks that open with a single bump are all ways your bag, laptop and phone walk off.

• If it's a key lock, use your own padlock with a key nobody else has

• Don't share your code "just this once" — codes spread faster than you think

• Choose a solid padlock, not a £3 combination lock that opens with a firm tug

The 5-minute student security checklist

Do these in the first days of term and you close the door on 90% of opportunistic theft:

1. Change or re-key your room lock (or get written proof it was re-keyed before you moved in)

2. Change any default locker combinations and keep them to yourself

3. Fit your own padlock on gym, bike and storage lockers

4. Keep your laptop locked to your desk with a cable lock during library sessions

5. Back up coursework to the cloud — a stolen laptop hurts twice if your dissertation vanishes with it

6. Photograph serial numbers and check your contents insurance covers "away from home"
